The Beginner’s Guide to Munro Bagging: Conquering Scotland’s Highest Peaks

Imagine standing on the summit of a rugged Scottish peak, the wind in your hair, and breathtaking landscapes stretching out as far as the eye can see. Well, that’s exactly what it feels like when you bag your first Munro. Whether you’re a seasoned mountaineer or a novice hiker, Munro Bagging offers an unforgettable and exhilarating challenge that inspires hikers and adventurers from around the world to explore the Scottish Highlands in search of the next peak to conquer. In this guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about Munro Bagging, from where to get started to the gear and skills you’ll need to conquer them all.

What is a Munro?

First of all, let’s start with the basics: What is a Munro? Well, a Munro is any Scottish mountain with a height of 3,000 feet (914.4 metres) or more.

What is Munro Bagging?

As you’ve probably guessed by now, Munro Bagging is simply the activity of climbing Scotland’s Munros. It’s a tradition that traces back to Sir Hugh Munro, who first catalogued these peaks in 1891. But the real challenge lies in ‘bagging’ all of them and joining the elite group hikers and climbers known as “completists” who have summited every Munro in Scotland.

How many Munros are there in Scotland?

So, here’s where the challenge comes in! In total, there are 282 Munros scattered across the Scottish Highlands. Each and every one of them is different and comes with its own set of unique challenges, but that’s what makes Munro Bagging such an adventure! And along the way, you’ll encounter Scotland’s diverse wildlife, picturesque landscapes, and the ever-changing beauty of the Highlands.

Planning Your Munro Bagging Adventure

To be successful on your Munro Bagging quest, you’ll need to plan each of the climbs carefully. It goes without saying that you’ll need to be physically prepared, equipped with suitable hiking and climbing gear and take all the necessary safety precautions.

But beyond that, you’ll need to know that the weather conditions can be extremely unpredictable in the Scottish Highlands, even during the summer months. The best times for Munro Bagging are typically late spring to early autumn when the weather is likely to be more stable. That said, always be sure to check the Mountain Weather Information Service’s website or Met Office’s Mountain weather forecast for the most up-to-date weather forecasts before you set off.

The Best Munros for Beginners

With a total of 282 peaks to conquer, the real question is: where do you even start? Well, here’s a few of the best Munros for beginners to get you started on your Munro Bagging adventure:

  • Ben Chonzie (931m) – Located near Crieff, it’s often considered one of the easiest Munros. The path is straightforward and offers gentle slopes, making it an excellent choice for first-timers.
  • Mount Keen (939m) – The most easterly Munro, accessible via Glen Esk or Glen Tanar, offers a relatively easy ascent. It’s a long but clear path, suitable for those just starting out.
  • Schiehallion (1,083m) – Known for its distinctive shape and relatively isolated position, Schiehallion has a well-made path for most of the way and offers stunning views, making it a rewarding climb for beginners.
  • Ben Lomond (974m) – This is the most southerly Munro and one of the most popular, thanks to its proximity to Glasgow. It offers well-trodden paths and spectacular views over Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.
  • Cairn Gorm (1,245m) – While Cairn Gorm is one of the higher Munros, the access from the Cairngorm Ski Centre makes the ascent less daunting. The views from the plateau are simply breathtaking, but be prepared for changeable weather.
  • Ben Vorlich (Loch Earn) (985m) – This Munro offers a clear path and is relatively straightforward to navigate. Its location near Loch Earn provides scenic views and a memorable introduction to Munro bagging.
  • Beinn Ghlas and Ben Lawers (1,103m and 1,214m) – Tackling these two Munros in one go is a great option for beginners looking for a slightly bigger challenge. The path is well-maintained, and you’re rewarded with stunning views across Loch Tay and the surrounding area.

Remember, even “easy” Munros require preparation. Check the weather forecast, carry the right gear, and ensure you have navigation aids. Starting with these more accessible peaks will build your confidence and skills and will set you well on the path to bagging all 282 Scottish Munros.

How to Track the Munros you Bag

Once you start, you won’t be able to stop. So, naturally, you’re going to need a way to keep a track of all the Munros you’ve already conquered and which ones you’re yet to tame. There are a few different ways of doing that, including:

  • Hiking Journal – you could choose to log all your climbs in a personal hiking journal, create or download a checklist of all 282 Munros and tick them off as you go or even use a spreadsheet.
  • Walkhighlands App or Website – you can register free on the Walkhighlands website or app to log your Munro ascents online and share your conquests with the hiking community.
  • Munro Maps – personally, I think there’s nothing better than a physical map that you can scratch or tick off as you go. You can get one on the ONS website or on Etsy.

And that’s it. You know everything you need to start bagging Munros!

Just remember that Munro Bagging is more than just a hiking challenge. It’s a journey of discovery, endurance, and personal growth. Whether you’re drawn in by the stunning landscapes, the physical challenge, or the sense of community when you’re out with other “baggers”, Munro Bagging offers a unique and rewarding adventure. So lace up your boots, pack your gear, and set out to conquer Scotland’s highest peaks.
